   49  »Ήρθα να βάλω φωτιά  στη γη, και τι άλλο να θέλω αν έχει ήδη ανάψει; 50  Έχω δε ένα βάφτισμα με το οποίο να βαφτιστώ, και σε πόση οδύνη βρίσκομαι ώσπου να τελειώσει!  51  Νομίζετε ότι ήρθα να δώσω ειρήνη στη γη; Και βέβαια όχι, σας λέω, αλλά απεναντίας διαίρεση.  52  Διότι από τώρα και στο εξής θα υπάρχουν πέντε σε ένα σπίτι διαιρεμένοι, τρεις εναντίον δύο και δύο εναντίον τριών.  53  Θα διαιρεθούν, πατέρας εναντίον γιου και γιος εναντίον πατέρα, μητέρα εναντίον κόρης και κόρη εναντίον μητέρας, πεθερά εναντίον της νύφης της και νύφη εναντίον της πεθεράς».  

   54  Κατόπιν άρχισε να λέει και στα πλήθη: «Όταν δείτε ένα σύννεφο να υψώνεται στα δυτικά, αμέσως λέτε: “Έρχεται καταιγίδα”, και έτσι γίνεται.  55  Και όταν δείτε ότι φυσάει νότιος άνεμος, λέτε: “Θα γίνει καύσωνας”, και γίνεται. 56  Υποκριτές, ξέρετε να εξετάζετε την εξωτερική εμφάνιση της γης και του ουρανού, αλλά πώς γίνεται να μην ξέρετε να εξετάζετε αυτή τη συγκεκριμένη χρονική περίοδο;  57  Γιατί δεν κρίνετε επίσης μόνοι σας τι είναι δίκαιο;  58  Παραδείγματος χάρη, όταν πηγαίνεις με τον αντίδικό σου σε κάποιον άρχοντα, κάνε προσπάθειες καθ’ οδόν να απαλλαχτείς από την αντιδικία με αυτόν, για να μη σε σύρει μπροστά στο δικαστή, και ο δικαστής σε παραδώσει στον υπηρέτη του δικαστηρίου, και ο υπηρέτης του δικαστηρίου σε ρίξει στη φυλακή.  59  Σου λέω: Δεν πρόκειται να βγεις από εκεί ώσπου να ξεπληρώσεις και το τελευταίο μικρό νόμισμα ελάχιστης αξίας».

13  Εκείνον τον καιρό ήταν παρόντες κάποιοι που του ανέφεραν σχετικά με τους Γαλιλαίους,  το αίμα των οποίων ο Πιλάτος είχε αναμείξει με τις θυσίες τους. 2  Αυτός, λοιπόν, αποκρίθηκε και τους είπε: «Νομίζετε ότι αυτοί οι Γαλιλαίοι αποδείχτηκαν χειρότεροι αμαρτωλοί  από όλους τους άλλους Γαλιλαίους επειδή έπαθαν αυτά τα πράγματα; 3  Και βέβαια όχι, σας λέω· αλλά, αν δεν μετανοήσετε, όλοι θα καταστραφείτε παρόμοια.  4  Ή εκείνοι οι δεκαοχτώ, πάνω στους οποίους έπεσε ο πύργος στον Σιλωάμ και τους σκότωσε, νομίζετε ότι αυτοί αποδείχτηκαν μεγαλύτεροι χρεώστες από όλους τους άλλους ανθρώπους που κατοικούσαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ; 5  Και βέβαια όχι, σας λέω· αλλά, αν δεν μετανοήσετε, όλοι θα καταστραφείτε με τον ίδιο τρόπο».  

   6  Κατόπιν άρχισε να λέει αυτή την παραβολή: «Κάποιος άνθρωπος είχε φυτεμένη μια συκιά στο αμπέλι  του, και ήρθε ψάχνοντας να βρει καρπό σε αυτήν,  αλλά δεν βρήκε.  7  Τότε είπε στον αμπελουργό: “Τρία χρόνια  τώρα έρχομαι ψάχνοντας να βρω καρπό σε αυτή τη συκιά, αλλά δεν βρίσκω. Κόψε την!  Γιατί να αχρηστεύει το έδαφος;” 8  Απαντώντας αυτός του είπε: “Κύριε, άφησέ  την και αυτόν το χρόνο ώσπου να σκάψω γύρω της και να βάλω κοπριά· 9  και αν μεν παραγάγει καρπό στο μέλλον, έχει καλώς· αλλά αν όχι, θα την κόψεις”».  
 

49 “I came to start a fire on the earth, and what more is there for me to wish if it has already been lighted? 50 Indeed, I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and how I am being distressed until it is finished! 51 Do YOU imagine I came to give peace on the earth? No, indeed, I tell YOU, but rather division. 52 For from now on there will be five in one house divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against [her] mother, mother-in-law against [her] daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against [her] mother-in-law.”

54 Then he went on to say also to the crowds: “When YOU see a cloud rising in western parts, at once YOU say, ‘A storm is coming,’ and it turns out so. 55 And when YOU see that a south wind is blowing, YOU say, ‘There will be a heat wave,’ and it occurs. 56 Hypocrites, YOU know how to examine the outward appearance of earth and sky, but how is it YOU do not know how to examine this particular time? 57 Why do YOU not judge also for yourselves what is righteous? 58 For example, when you are going with your adversary at law to a ruler, get to work, while on the way, to rid yourself of the dispute with him, that he may never hale you before the judge, and the judge deliver you to the court officer, and the court officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, You will certainly not get out from there until you pay over the last small coin of very little value.”
13 At that very season there were certain ones present that reported to him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 So in reply he said to them: “Do YOU imagine that these Galileans were proved worse sinners than all other Galileans because they have suffered these things? 3 No, indeed, I tell YOU; but, unless YOU repent, YOU will all likewise be destroyed. 4 Or those eighteen upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, thereby killing them, do YOU imagine that they were proved greater debtors than all other men inhabiting Jerusalem? 5 No, indeed, I tell YOU; but, unless YOU repent, YOU will all be destroyed in the same way.”

6 Then he went on to tell this illustration: “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it, but found none. 7 Then he said to the vinedresser, ‘Here it is three years that I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, but have found none. Cut it down! Why really should it keep the ground useless?’ 8 In reply he said to him, ‘Master, let it alone also this year, until I dig around it and put on manure; 9 and if then it produces fruit in the future, [well and good]; but if not, you shall cut it down.’”
