Ρωμαίους 9:1 — 9:18

9  Λέω την αλήθεια  σύμφωνα με τον Χριστό· δεν λέω ψέματα,  αφού η συνείδησή μου δίνει μαρτυρία μαζί με εμένα σύμφωνα με άγιο πνεύμα, 2  ότι έχω μεγάλη λύπη και ακατάπαυστο πόνο στην καρδιά μου.  3  Διότι θα ευχόμουν να ήμουν εγώ ο ίδιος αποχωρισμένος από τον Χριστό ως ο καταραμένος, για χάρη των αδελφών μου,  των συγγενών μου κατά σάρκα,  4  οι οποίοι είναι Ισραηλίτες,  στους οποίους ανήκει η υιοθεσία  και η δόξα  και οι διαθήκες  και η χορήγηση του Νόμου  και η ιερή υπηρεσία  και οι υποσχέσεις·  5  στους οποίους ανήκουν οι προπάτορες  και από τους οποίους προήλθε ο Χριστός κατά σάρκα:  ο Θεός,  που είναι πάνω σε όλα, ας είναι ευλογημένος για πάντα. Αμήν.

   6  Ωστόσο, όχι ότι έχει αποτύχει ο λόγος του Θεού.  Διότι δεν είναι πράγματι «Ισραήλ» όλοι όσοι προέρχονται από τον Ισραήλ.  7  Ούτε επειδή είναι σπέρμα του Αβραάμ είναι όλοι παιδιά,  αλλά: «Αυτό που θα αποκληθεί “σπέρμα σου” θα είναι μέσω του Ισαάκ».  8  Δηλαδή, τα κατά σάρκα παιδιά  δεν είναι πράγματι τα παιδιά του Θεού,  αλλά τα παιδιά που είναι μέσω της υπόσχεσης  υπολογίζονται ως το σπέρμα. 9  Διότι ο λόγος της υπόσχεσης ήταν ο εξής: «Αυτόν τον καιρό θα έρθω και η Σάρρα θα έχει γιο».  10  Εντούτοις, όχι μόνο αυτή η περίπτωση, αλλά και όταν η Ρεβέκκα συνέλαβε δίδυμα  από έναν άντρα, τον Ισαάκ τον προπάτορά μας: 11  Διότι όταν αυτά δεν είχαν ακόμη γεννηθεί ούτε είχαν πράξει τίποτα καλό ή απαίσιο,  προκειμένου ο σκοπός του Θεού σχετικά με την εκλογή να παραμένει βασισμένος, όχι σε έργα, αλλά σε Εκείνον που καλεί,  12  της ειπώθηκε: «Ο μεγαλύτερος θα είναι δούλος του νεοτέρου».  13  Όπως είναι γραμμένο: «Εγώ αγάπησα τον Ιακώβ, τον δε Ησαύ τον μίσησα». 

   14  Τι θα πούμε λοιπόν; Μήπως υπάρχει αδικία στον Θεό;  Ποτέ να μη συμβεί αυτό! 15  Διότι αυτός λέει στον Μωυσή: «Θα ελεήσω όποιον ελεώ και θα δείξω συμπόνια σε όποιον δείχνω συμπόνια».  16  Άρα λοιπόν, εξαρτάται, όχι από εκείνον που θέλει ούτε από εκείνον που τρέχει, αλλά από τον Θεό,  ο οποίος ελεεί.  17  Διότι η Γραφή λέει στον Φαραώ: «Γι’ αυτόν το λόγο σε άφησα να παραμείνεις, για να δείξω αναφορικά με εσένα τη δύναμή μου και για να διακηρυχτεί το όνομά μου σε όλη τη γη».  18  Άρα λοιπόν, όποιον θέλει ελεεί,  αλλά όποιον θέλει τον αφήνει να γίνει ισχυρογνώμων. 

9 I am telling the truth in Christ; I am not lying, since my conscience bears witness with me in holy spirit, 2 that I have great grief and unceasing pain in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were separated as the cursed one from the Christ in behalf of my brothers, my relatives according to the flesh, 4 who, as such, are Israelites, to whom belong the adoption as sons and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the sacred service and the promises; 5 to whom the forefathers belong and from whom the Christ [sprang] according to the flesh: God, who is over all, [be] blessed forever. Amen.

6 However, it is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all who [spring] from Israel are really “Israel.” 7 Neither because they are Abraham’s seed are they all children, but: “What will be called ‘your seed’ will be through Isaac.” 8 That is, the children in the flesh are not really the children of God, but the children by the promise are counted as the seed. 9 For the word of promise was as follows: “At this time I will come and Sarah will have a son.” 10 Yet not that case alone, but also when Rebekah conceived twins from the one [man], Isaac our forefather: 11 for when they had not yet been born nor had practiced anything good or vile, in order that the purpose of God respecting the choosing might continue dependent, not upon works, but upon the One who calls, 12 it was said to her: “The older will be the slave of the younger.” 13 Just as it is written: “I loved Jacob, but Esau I hated.”

14 What shall we say, then? Is there injustice with God? Never may that become so! 15 For he says to Moses: “I will have mercy upon whomever I do have mercy, and I will show compassion to whomever I do show compassion.” 16 So, then, it depends, not upon the one wishing nor upon the one running, but upon God, who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “For this very cause I have let you remain, that in connection with you I may show my power, and that my name may be declared in all the earth.” 18 So, then, upon whom he wishes he has mercy, but whom he wishes he lets become obstinate.
