1 Κορινθίους 14:7 — 14:21

 7  Ασφαλώς τα άψυχα πράγματα βγάζουν ήχο,  είτε αυλός είτε άρπα· αν δεν υπάρξει διάστημα ανάμεσα στους φθόγγους, πώς θα γίνει αντιληπτό τι παίζεται στον αυλό ή στην άρπα; 8  Διότι, πράγματι, αν η σάλπιγγα δώσει ασαφές παράγγελμα, ποιος θα ετοιμαστεί για μάχη;  9  Έτσι και εσείς, αν μέσω της γλώσσας δεν προφέρετε ευκολονόητα λόγια,  πώς θα γίνει αντιληπτό τι λέγεται; Στην πραγματικότητα, θα μιλάτε στον αέρα.   10  Μπορεί να υπάρχουν τόσο πολλά είδη ομιλιών στον κόσμο, και όμως κανένα δεν είναι χωρίς νόημα.  11  Αν, λοιπόν, δεν καταλάβω τη δύναμη της ομιλίας, θα είμαι ξένος  για αυτόν που μιλάει και αυτός που μιλάει θα είναι ξένος για εμένα.  12  Έτσι και εσείς, εφόσον επιθυμείτε με ζήλο χαρίσματα του πνεύματος,  να ζητάτε να αφθονείτε σε αυτά για την εποικοδόμηση της εκκλησίας.   

   13  Αυτός, λοιπόν, που μιλάει σε κάποια γλώσσα ας προσεύχεται για να μεταφράζει.   14  Διότι αν προσεύχομαι σε κάποια γλώσσα, το χάρισμα του πνεύματος που έχω είναι αυτό που προσεύχεται,  αλλά ο νους μου είναι άκαρπος.  15  Τι πρέπει να γίνει λοιπόν; Θα προσευχηθώ με το χάρισμα του πνεύματος, αλλά θα προσευχηθώ και με το νου μου. Θα ψάλω αίνους  με το χάρισμα του πνεύματος, αλλά θα ψάλω αίνους και με το νου μου.   16  Αλλιώς, αν προσφέρεις αίνο με χάρισμα του πνεύματος, πώς θα πει «Αμήν»  στην ευχαριστήρια προσευχή σου αυτός που κάθεται στη θέση του συνηθισμένου ατόμου, εφόσον δεν γνωρίζει τι λες;  17  Εσύ μεν λες ευχαριστήρια προσευχή με καλό τρόπο, ο άλλος όμως δεν εποικοδομείται.   18  Ευχαριστώ τον Θεό, εγώ μιλώ σε περισσότερες γλώσσες από όλους σας.   19  Παρ’ όλα αυτά, σε μια εκκλησία προτιμώ να πω πέντε λόγια με το νου μου, ώστε να διδάξω προφορικά και άλλους, παρά δέκα χιλιάδες λόγια σε κάποια γλώσσα. 

   20  Αδελφοί, μη γίνεστε μικρά παιδιά όσον αφορά τις δυνάμεις κατανόησης,  αλλά να είστε νήπια ως προς την κακία·  εντούτοις να γίνεστε πλήρως αναπτυγμένοι όσον αφορά τις δυνάμεις κατανόησης.  21  Στο Νόμο είναι γραμμένο: «“Με τις γλώσσες αλλοεθνών και με τα χείλη ξένων  θα μιλήσω σε αυτόν το λαό,  και εντούτοις ούτε και τότε θα με ακούσουν”, λέει ο Ιεχωβά». 

7 As it is, the inanimate things give off sound, whether a flute or a harp; unless it makes an interval to the tones, how will it be known what is being played on the flute or on the harp? 8 For truly, if the trumpet sounds an indistinct call, who will get ready for battle? 9 In the same way also, unless YOU through the tongue utter speech easily understood, how will it be known what is being spoken? YOU will, in fact, be speaking into the air. 10 It may be that there are so many kinds of speech sounds in the world, and yet no [kind] is without meaning. 11 If, then, I do not understand the force of the speech sound, I shall be a foreigner to the one speaking, and the one speaking will be a foreigner to me. 12 So also YOU yourselves, since YOU are zealously desirous of [gifts of the] spirit, seek to abound in them for the upbuilding of the congregation.

13 Therefore let the one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may translate. 14 For if I am praying in a tongue, it is my [gift of the] spirit that is praying, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What is to be done, then? I will pray with the [gift of the] spirit, but I will also pray with [my] mind. I will sing praise with the [gift of the] spirit, but I will also sing praise with [my] mind. 16 Otherwise, if you offer praise with a [gift of the] spirit, how will the man occupying the seat of the ordinary person say “Amen” to your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying? 17 True, you give thanks in a fine way, but the other man is not being built up. 18 I thank God, I speak in more tongues than all of YOU do. 19 Nevertheless, in a congregation I would rather speak five words with my mind, that I might also instruct others orally, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 Brothers, do not become young children in powers of understanding, but be babes as to badness; yet become full-grown in powers of understanding. 21 In the Law it is written: “‘With the tongues of foreigners and with the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, and yet not even then will they give heed to me,’ says Jehovah.”
