13  Πάλι βγήκε έξω, δίπλα στη θάλασσα· και όλο το πλήθος ερχόταν σε αυτόν, και εκείνος τους δίδασκε. 14  Αλλά καθώς προχωρούσε, είδε τον Λευί, το γιο του Αλφαίου, να κάθεται στο γραφείο όπου εισπράττονταν οι φόροι, και του είπε: «Γίνε ακόλουθός μου». Και εκείνος σηκώθηκε και τον ακολούθησε. 15  Αργότερα πλάγιαζε μπροστά στο τραπέζι, στο σπίτι του, και πολλοί εισπράκτορες φόρων και αμαρτωλοί πλάγιαζαν μπροστά στο τραπέζι με τον Ιησού και τους μαθητές του, γιατί υπήρχαν πολλοί από αυτούς και τον ακολουθούσαν. 16  Αλλά οι γραμματείς των Φαρισαίων, όταν είδαν ότι αυτός έτρωγε με τους αμαρτωλούς και τους εισπράκτορες φόρων, άρχισαν να λένε στους μαθητές του: «Με τους εισπράκτορες φόρων και τους αμαρτωλούς τρώει;» 17  Όταν το άκουσε αυτό, ο Ιησούς τούς είπε: «Δεν χρειάζονται γιατρό εκείνοι που είναι γεροί αλλά εκείνοι που είναι άρρωστοι. Εγώ ήρθα να καλέσω, όχι δίκαιους ανθρώπους, αλλά αμαρτωλούς».

   18  Οι μαθητές του Ιωάννη και οι Φαρισαίοι έκαναν νηστείες. Γι’ αυτό, ήρθαν και του είπαν: «Γιατί οι μαθητές του Ιωάννη και οι μαθητές των Φαρισαίων κάνουν νηστείες, ενώ οι δικοί σου μαθητές δεν κάνουν νηστείες;» 19  Και ο Ιησούς τούς είπε: «Ενώ ο γαμπρός είναι μαζί τους, μήπως μπορούν οι φίλοι του γαμπρού να νηστεύουν; Όσο έχουν το γαμπρό μαζί τους δεν μπορούν να νηστεύουν. 20  Αλλά θα έρθουν ημέρες που ο γαμπρός θα αφαιρεθεί από αυτούς, και τότε θα νηστέψουν εκείνη την ημέρα. 21  Κανείς δεν ράβει σε παλιό εξωτερικό ένδυμα ένα μπάλωμα από πανί που δεν έχει μαζέψει· αν το κάνει αυτό, η μεγάλη του δύναμη το τραβάει από αυτό, το καινούριο από το παλιό, και το σκίσιμο γίνεται χειρότερο. 22  Επίσης, κανείς δεν βάζει καινούριο κρασί σε παλιά ασκιά· αν το κάνει αυτό, το κρασί σκίζει τα ασκιά, και χάνεται το κρασί καθώς και τα ασκιά. Αλλά το καινούριο κρασί το βάζουν σε καινούρια ασκιά».

   23  Καθώς περνούσε μέσα από τα χωράφια με τα σιτηρά το σάββατο, οι μαθητές του άρχισαν να προχωρούν αποσπώντας τα στάχυα. 24  Γι’ αυτό, οι Φαρισαίοι άρχισαν να του λένε: «Δες εδώ! Γιατί κάνουν στη διάρκεια του σαββάτου αυτό που δεν είναι νόμιμο;» 25  Αλλά εκείνος τους είπε: «Δεν έχετε διαβάσει ούτε μία φορά τι έκανε ο Δαβίδ όταν βρέθηκε σε ανάγκη και πείνασε, αυτός και οι άντρες που ήταν μαζί του; 26  Ότι μπήκε στον οίκο του Θεού, σύμφωνα με την αφήγηση σχετικά με τον Αβιάθαρ τον πρωθιερέα, και έφαγε τα ψωμιά της παρουσίασης, τα οποία δεν είναι νόμιμο να φάει κανείς παρά μόνο οι ιερείς, και έδωσε και στους άντρες που ήταν μαζί του;» 27  Στη συνέχεια τους είπε: «Το σάββατο ήρθε σε ύπαρξη για χάρη του ανθρώπου, και όχι ο άνθρωπος για χάρη του σαββάτου· 28  επομένως, ο Γιος του ανθρώπου είναι Κύριος ακόμη και του σαββάτου».

3  Και πάλι μπήκε σε κάποια συναγωγή, και εκεί ήταν ένας άνθρωπος με ξεραμένο χέρι. 2  Τον παρατηρούσαν, λοιπόν, για να δουν αν θα θεράπευε τον άνθρωπο στη διάρκεια του σαββάτου, ώστε να τον κατηγορήσουν. 3  Και εκείνος είπε στον άνθρωπο με το ξεραμένο χέρι: «Σήκω και έλα στη μέση». 4  Κατόπιν τους είπε: «Είναι νόμιμο να κάνει κάποιος στη διάρκεια του σαββάτου μια καλή πράξη ή να κάνει μια κακή πράξη, να σώσει ή να θανατώσει μια ψυχή;» Αλλά αυτοί έμεναν σιωπηλοί. 5  Και αφού κοίταξε ολόγυρα προς αυτούς με αγανάκτηση, νιώθοντας πολύ μεγάλη λύπη για την αναισθησία της καρδιάς τους, είπε στον άνθρωπο: «Τέντωσε το χέρι σου». Και εκείνος το τέντωσε, και το χέρι του αποκαταστάθηκε. 6  Τότε οι Φαρισαίοι βγήκαν έξω και άρχισαν αμέσως να συνεννοούνται με τους οπαδούς της παράταξης του Ηρώδη εναντίον του, για να τον θανατώσουν.
 

13 Again he went out beside the sea; and all the crowd kept coming to him, and he began to teach them. 14 But as he was passing along, he caught sight of Levi the [son] of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and he said to him: “Be my follower.” And rising up he followed him. 15 Later he happened to be reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many of them and they began following him. 16 But the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw he was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, began saying to his disciples: “Does he eat with the tax collectors and sinners?” 17 Upon hearing this Jesus said to them: “Those who are strong do not need a physician, but those who are ill do. I came to call, not righteous people, but sinners.”

18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees practiced fasting. So they came and said to him: “Why is it the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees practice fasting, but your disciples do not practice fasting?” 19 And Jesus said to them: “While the bridegroom is with them the friends of the bridegroom cannot fast, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 But days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. 21 Nobody sews a patch of unshrunk cloth upon an old outer garment; if he does, its full strength pulls from it, the new from the old, and the tear becomes worse. 22 Also, nobody puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the wine bursts the skins, and the wine is lost as well as the skins. But people put new wine into new wineskins.”

23 Now it happened that he was proceeding through the grainfields on the sabbath, and his disciples started to make their way plucking the heads of grain. 24 So the Pharisees went saying to him: “Look here! Why are they doing on the sabbath what is not lawful?” 25 But he said to them: “Have YOU never once read what David did when he fell in need and got hungry, he and the men with him? 26 How he entered into the house of God, in the account about Abiathar the chief priest, and ate the loaves of presentation, which it is not lawful for anybody to eat except the priests, and he gave some also to the men who were with him?” 27 So he went on to say to them: “The sabbath came into existence for the sake of man, and not man for the sake of the sabbath; 28 hence the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath.”

3 Once again he entered into a synagogue, and a man was there with a dried-up hand. 2 So they were watching him closely to see whether he would cure the man on the sabbath, in order that they might accuse him. 3 And he said to the man with the withered hand: “Get up [and come] to the center.” 4 Next he said to them: “Is it lawful on the sabbath to do a good deed or to do a bad deed, to save or to kill a soul?” But they kept silent. 5 And after looking around upon them with indignation, being thoroughly grieved at the insensibility of their hearts, he said to the man: “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 At that the Pharisees went out and immediately began holding council with the party followers of Herod against him, in order to destroy him.
