Πράξεις 17:1 — 17:21

17  Ταξίδεψαν, λοιπόν, μέσω της Αμφίπολης και της Απολλωνίας και ήρθαν στη Θεσσαλονίκη,  όπου υπήρχε συναγωγή των Ιουδαίων. 2 Και όπως συνήθιζε,  ο Παύλος πήγε εκεί σε αυτούς και επί τρία σάββατα συζητούσε μαζί τους λογικά από τις Γραφές,  3 εξηγώντας και αποδεικνύοντας με παραθέσεις ότι ήταν απαραίτητο να υποφέρει  ο Χριστός και να αναστηθεί από τους νεκρούς,  και λέγοντας: «Αυτός είναι ο Χριστός —ο Ιησούς τον οποίο εγώ διαγγέλλω σε εσάς». 4 Ως αποτέλεσμα, ορισμένοι από αυτούς έγιναν πιστοί  και συνταυτίστηκαν με τον Παύλο και τον Σίλα,  και το ίδιο έκανε ένα μεγάλο πλήθος από τους Έλληνες που λάτρευαν τον Θεό και αρκετές από τις εξέχουσες γυναίκες.

   5 Αλλά οι Ιουδαίοι, έχοντας γεμίσει ζήλια,  πήραν μαζί τους κάποιους πονηρούς άντρες από τους αργόσχολους της αγοράς και σχημάτισαν έναν όχλο και άρχισαν να προκαλούν σάλο στην πόλη.  Και επιτέθηκαν στο σπίτι του Ιάσονα  και ζητούσαν να φερθούν αυτοί μπροστά στον όχλο.  6 Καθώς δεν τους βρήκαν, έσυραν τον Ιάσονα και ορισμένους αδελφούς στους άρχοντες της πόλης, κραυγάζοντας: «Αυτοί οι άνθρωποι, που έχουν αναστατώσει  την κατοικημένη γη, είναι παρόντες και εδώ, 7 και ο Ιάσων τούς φιλοξενεί. Και όλοι αυτοί ενεργούν ενάντια στα διατάγματα  του Καίσαρα, λέγοντας ότι υπάρχει άλλος βασιλιάς,  ο Ιησούς».  8 Και εκείνοι τάραξαν το πλήθος και τους άρχοντες της πόλης, οι οποίοι άκουσαν αυτά τα πράγματα·  9 και αφού πήραν πρώτα επαρκή εγγύηση από τον Ιάσονα και τους άλλους, τους άφησαν να φύγουν.

   10  Αμέσως, οι αδελφοί έστειλαν νύχτα  τον Παύλο καθώς και τον Σίλα στη Βέροια, οι οποίοι όταν έφτασαν μπήκαν στη συναγωγή των Ιουδαίων.  11 Αυτοί είχαν πιο ευγενικό φρόνημα από εκείνους που ήταν στη Θεσσαλονίκη, γιατί δέχτηκαν το λόγο με τη μεγαλύτερη προθυμία, εξετάζοντας  με προσοχή τις Γραφές  καθημερινά για το αν ήταν έτσι τα πράγματα.  12 Ως αποτέλεσμα, πολλοί από αυτούς έγιναν πιστοί, καθώς και αρκετές από τις ευυπόληπτες  Ελληνίδες γυναίκες και αρκετοί από τους άντρες.  13 Αλλά όταν οι Ιουδαίοι από τη Θεσσαλονίκη έμαθαν ότι ο λόγος του Θεού διαγγέλθηκε και στη Βέροια από τον Παύλο, ήρθαν και εκεί για να ξεσηκώσουν  και να ταράξουν  τις μάζες.  14 Τότε οι αδελφοί έστειλαν αμέσως τον Παύλο να πάει ως τη θάλασσα·  αλλά ο Σίλας και ο Τιμόθεος έμειναν εκεί. 15 Εκείνοι δε που οδηγούσαν τον Παύλο τον έφεραν ως την Αθήνα και, αφού έλαβαν εντολή να έρθουν σε αυτόν ο Σίλας και ο Τιμόθεος  το ταχύτερο δυνατόν, αναχώρησαν.

   16  Ενώ ο Παύλος τούς περίμενε στην Αθήνα, το πνεύμα του μέσα του παροξυνόταν  βλέποντας την πόλη γεμάτη είδωλα.  17 Άρχισε, λοιπόν, να συζητάει λογικά στη συναγωγή με τους Ιουδαίους  και με τους άλλους ανθρώπους που λάτρευαν τον Θεό και κάθε ημέρα στην αγορά  με όσους βρίσκονταν εκεί.  18 Κάποιοι, όμως, τόσο από τους Επικούρειους όσο και από τους Στωικούς φιλοσόφους  έπιασαν συζήτηση μαζί του διαφωνώντας, και μερικοί έλεγαν: «Τι θέλει τάχα να πει αυτός ο φλύαρος;»  Άλλοι: «Φαίνεται ότι είναι διαγγελέας ξένων θεοτήτων». Και αυτό επειδή κήρυττε τα καλά νέα για τον Ιησού και την ανάσταση.  19 Τον έπιασαν, λοιπόν, και τον οδήγησαν στον Άρειο Πάγο, λέγοντας: «Μπορούμε να μάθουμε ποια είναι αυτή η καινούρια διδασκαλία  για την οποία μιλάς;  20 Διότι παρουσιάζεις ορισμένα πράγματα που είναι παράξενα στα αφτιά μας. Γι’ αυτό, θέλουμε να μάθουμε τι σημαίνουν άραγε αυτά τα πράγματα».  21 Όλοι δε οι Αθηναίοι και οι ξένοι που ήταν παρεπίδημοι εκεί περνούσαν τον ελεύθερο χρόνο τους αποκλειστικά και μόνο λέγοντας κάτι ή ακούγοντας κάτι καινούριο.

 

17 They now journeyed through Amphipolis and Apollonia and came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 So according to Paul’s custom he went inside to them, and for three sabbaths he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving by references that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and [saying]: “This is the Christ, this Jesus whom I am publishing to YOU.” 4 As a result some of them became believers and associated themselves with Paul and Silas, and a great multitude of the Greeks who worshiped [God] and not a few of the principal women did so.

5 But the Jews, getting jealous, took into their company certain wicked men of the marketplace idlers and formed a mob and proceeded to throw the city into an uproar. And they assaulted the house of Jason and went seeking to have them brought forth to the rabble. 6 When they did not find them they dragged Jason and certain brothers to the city rulers, crying out: “These men that have overturned the inhabited earth are present here also, 7 and Jason has received them with hospitality. And all these [men] act in opposition to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king, Jesus.” 8 They indeed agitated the crowd and the city rulers when they heard these things; 9 and first after taking sufficient security from Jason and the others they let them go.

10 Immediately by night the brothers sent both Paul and Silas out to Beroea, and these, upon arriving, went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 Now the latter were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with the greatest eagerness of mind, carefully examining the Scriptures daily as to whether these things were so. 12 Therefore many of them became believers, and so did not a few of the reputable Greek women and of the men. 13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was published also in Beroea by Paul, they came there also to incite and agitate the masses. 14 Then the brothers immediately sent Paul off to go as far as the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained behind there. 15 However, those conducting Paul brought him as far as Athens and, after receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as quickly as possible, they departed.

16 Now while Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit within him came to be irritated at beholding that the city was full of idols. 17 Consequently he began to reason in the synagogue with the Jews and the other people who worshiped [God] and every day in the marketplace with those who happened to be on hand. 18 But certain ones of both the Epicurean and the Stoic philosophers took to conversing with him controversially, and some would say: “What is it this chatterer would like to tell?” Others: “He seems to be a publisher of foreign deities.” This was because he was declaring the good news of Jesus and the resurrection. 19 So they laid hold of him and led him to the Areopagus, saying: “Can we get to know what this new teaching is which is spoken by you? 20 For you are introducing some things that are strange to our ears. Therefore we desire to get to know what these things purport to be.” 21 In fact, all Athenians and the foreigners sojourning there would spend their leisure time at nothing but telling something or listening to something new.
