Πράξεις 28:1 — 28:16

28  Και αφού καταφέραμε να σωθούμε, τότε μάθαμε ότι το νησί ονομαζόταν Μάλτα.  2 Και οι ξενόγλωσσοι έδειξαν ασυνήθιστη ανθρώπινη καλοσύνη  σε εμάς, γιατί άναψαν φωτιά και μας υποδέχτηκαν όλους προσφέροντας βοήθεια εξαιτίας της βροχής που έπεφτε και εξαιτίας του κρύου.  3 Αλλά όταν ο Παύλος μάζεψε ένα δεμάτι κλαδιά και το έβαλε πάνω στη φωτιά, μια οχιά βγήκε λόγω της θερμότητας και πιάστηκε πάνω στο χέρι του.  4 Όταν οι ξενόγλωσσοι είδαν το δηλητηριώδες πλάσμα να κρέμεται από το χέρι του, άρχισαν να λένε ο ένας στον άλλον: «Ασφαλώς αυτός ο άνθρωπος είναι φονιάς και, μολονότι κατάφερε να σωθεί από τη θάλασσα, η τιμωρός κρίση δεν του επέτρεψε να συνεχίσει να ζει».  5 Ωστόσο, εκείνος τίναξε από πάνω του το δηλητηριώδες πλάσμα και το έριξε στη φωτιά και δεν έπαθε κακό.  6 Αλλά αυτοί περίμεναν να πρηστεί από τη φλεγμονή ή ξαφνικά να πέσει νεκρός. Αφού περίμεναν πολύ και δεν είδαν να του συμβαίνει τίποτα κακό, άλλαξαν γνώμη και άρχισαν να λένε ότι ήταν θεός. 

   7  Στα περίχωρα, λοιπόν, εκείνου του τόπου είχε κτήματα ο πρώτος του νησιού, ονόματι Πόπλιος· και μας δέχτηκε φιλόξενα και μας περιποιήθηκε φιλάγαθα τρεις ημέρες.  8 Αλλά ο πατέρας του Πόπλιου ήταν κατάκοιτος, καθώς βασανιζόταν από πυρετό και δυσεντερία, και ο Παύλος πήγε σε αυτόν και προσευχήθηκε, έθεσε τα χέρια  του πάνω του και τον γιάτρεψε.  9 Αφού έγινε αυτό, άρχισαν και οι υπόλοιποι στο νησί που είχαν αρρώστιες να έρχονται σε αυτόν και να θεραπεύονται.  10 Και μας τίμησαν επίσης με πολλά δώρα και όταν αποπλέαμε μας φόρτωσαν με πράγματα για τις ανάγκες μας.

   11  Ύστερα από τρεις μήνες αποπλεύσαμε με ένα πλοίο από την Αλεξάνδρεια,  το οποίο είχε περάσει το χειμώνα στο νησί και είχε για ακρόπρωρο τους «Διόσκουρους». 12 Και αφού μπήκαμε στο λιμάνι των Συρακουσών μείναμε τρεις ημέρες,  13 και από εκεί περιπλεύσαμε την ακτή και φτάσαμε στο Ρήγιο. Ύστερα από μία ημέρα σηκώθηκε νότιος άνεμος και φτάσαμε στους Ποτιόλους τη δεύτερη ημέρα.  14 Εδώ βρήκαμε αδελφούς και εκείνοι μας ικέτευσαν να μείνουμε μαζί τους εφτά ημέρες· και έτσι ήρθαμε προς τη Ρώμη. 15 Και από εκεί οι αδελφοί, όταν άκουσαν τα νέα για εμάς, ήρθαν να μας συναντήσουν ως την Αγορά του Αππίου και τις Τρεις Ταβέρνες και μόλις τους είδε ο Παύλος ευχαρίστησε τον Θεό και πήρε θάρρος.  16 Όταν τελικά μπήκαμε στη Ρώμη, επιτράπηκε  στον Παύλο να μένει μόνος του με το στρατιώτη που τον φρουρούσε.

 

28 And when we had made it to safety, then we learned that the island was called Malta. 2 And the foreign-speaking people showed us extraordinary human kindness, for they kindled a fire and received all of us helpfully because of the rain that was falling and because of the cold. 3 But when Paul collected a certain bundle of sticks and laid it upon the fire, a viper came out due to the heat and fastened itself on his hand. 4 When the foreign-speaking people caught sight of the venomous creature hanging from his hand, they began saying to one another: “Surely this man is a murderer, and although he made it to safety from the sea, vindictive justice did not permit him to keep on living.” 5 However, he shook the venomous creature off into the fire and suffered no harm. 6 But they were expecting he was going to swell up with inflammation or suddenly drop dead. After they waited for a long while and beheld nothing hurtful happen to him, they changed their mind and began saying he was a god.

7 Now in the neighborhood of that place the principal man of the island, named Publius, had lands; and he received us hospitably and entertained us benevolently three days. 8 But it happened that the father of Publius was lying down distressed with fever and dysentery, and Paul went in to him and prayed, laid his hands upon him and healed him. 9 After this occurred, the rest of the people on the island who had sicknesses also began to come to him and be cured. 10 And they also honored us with many gifts and, when we were setting sail, they loaded us with things for our needs.

11 Three months later we set sail in a boat from Alexandria that had wintered in the island and with the figurehead “Sons of Zeus.” 12 And putting into port at Syracuse we remained three days, 13 from which place we went around and arrived at Rhegium. And a day later a south wind sprang up and we made it into Puteoli on the second day. 14 Here we found brothers and were entreated to remain with them seven days; and in this way we came toward Rome. 15 And from there the brothers, when they heard the news about us, came to meet us as far as the Marketplace of Appius and Three Taverns and, upon catching sight of them, Paul thanked God and took courage. 16 When, finally, we entered into Rome, Paul was permitted to stay by himself with the soldier guarding him.
