Γαλάτες 2:1 — 2:21

2  Έπειτα, δεκατέσσερα χρόνια αργότερα, ανέβηκα πάλι στην Ιερουσαλήμ  με τον Βαρνάβα,  παίρνοντας μαζί μου και τον Τίτο. 2  Ανέβηκα δε κατόπιν αποκάλυψης.  Και παρουσίασα σε αυτούς  τα καλά νέα τα οποία κηρύττω ανάμεσα στα έθνη, κατ’ ιδίαν, ωστόσο, στους εξέχοντες άντρες, από φόβο μήπως έτρεχα  ή είχα τρέξει μάταια.  3  Παρ’ όλα αυτά, ακόμη και ο Τίτος,  που ήταν μαζί μου, δεν αναγκάστηκε να περιτμηθεί,  αν και ήταν Έλληνας. 4  Αλλά εξαιτίας των ψευδαδέλφων  που φέρθηκαν μέσα αθόρυβα,  οι οποίοι μπήκαν ύπουλα για να κατασκοπεύσουν την ελευθερία  μας την οποία έχουμε σε ενότητα με τον Χριστό Ιησού, ώστε να μας υποδουλώσουν  πλήρως— 5  σε αυτούς δεν υποχωρήσαμε μέσω υποταγής  ούτε μία ώρα, ώστε η αλήθεια  των καλών νέων να παραμείνει μαζί σας.

   6  Όσο δε για εκείνους που φαίνονταν ότι είναι κάτι —ό,τι είδους άνθρωποι και αν ήταν παλιότερα, δεν έχει διαφορά για εμένα —ο Θεός δεν κρίνει από την εξωτερική εμφάνιση του ανθρώπου —σε εμένα αυτοί οι εξέχοντες άντρες δεν μετέδωσαν στην πραγματικότητα τίποτα καινούριο. 7  Αλλά, απεναντίας, όταν είδαν ότι ήταν εμπιστευμένα  σε εμένα τα καλά νέα για τους απερίτμητους,  όπως ήταν στον Πέτρο για τους περιτμημένους — 8  διότι Αυτός που έδωσε στον Πέτρο δυνάμεις απαραίτητες για να είναι απόστολος στους περιτμημένους έδωσε και σε εμένα  δυνάμεις για τους εθνικούς— 9  ναι, όταν γνώρισαν την παρ’ αξία καλοσύνη  που μου δόθηκε,  ο Ιάκωβος  και ο Κηφάς και ο Ιωάννης, οι οποίοι φαίνονταν ότι είναι στύλοι,  έδωσαν σε εμένα και στον Βαρνάβα  το δεξί χέρι της από κοινού συμμετοχής,  για να πάμε εμείς στα έθνη, ενώ αυτοί στους περιτμημένους.  10  Μόνο που θα έπρεπε να έχουμε κατά νου τους φτωχούς.  Και αυτό ακριβώς το πράγμα προσπάθησα ένθερμα να κάνω.   

   11  Ωστόσο, όταν ο Κηφάς  ήρθε στην Αντιόχεια,  του αντιστάθηκα πρόσωπο με πρόσωπο, επειδή ήταν αξιοκατάκριτος.   12  Διότι προτού έρθουν ορισμένοι άντρες από τον Ιάκωβο,  έτρωγε  μαζί με ανθρώπους από τα έθνη· αλλά όταν έφτασαν εκείνοι, άρχισε να αποσύρεται και να αποχωρίζεται, επειδή φοβόταν  αυτούς που ήταν από την τάξη των περιτμημένων.   13  Οι υπόλοιποι Ιουδαίοι επίσης ενώθηκαν μαζί του σε αυτή την προσποίηση,  ώστε ακόμη και ο Βαρνάβας  παρασύρθηκε μαζί τους στην προσποίησή τους.  14  Αλλά όταν εγώ είδα ότι δεν βάδιζαν σωστά σύμφωνα με την αλήθεια των καλών νέων,  είπα στον Κηφά μπροστά σε όλους:  «Αν εσύ, μολονότι είσαι Ιουδαίος, ζεις όπως ζουν τα έθνη και όχι όπως οι Ιουδαίοι, πώς γίνεται να αναγκάζεις ανθρώπους από τα έθνη να ζουν σύμφωνα με τις Ιουδαϊκές συνήθειες;»   

   15  Εμείς που είμαστε Ιουδαίοι από τη φύση  μας και όχι αμαρτωλοί  από τα έθνη,  16  γνωρίζοντας ότι ο άνθρωπος ανακηρύσσεται δίκαιος,  όχι λόγω έργων νόμου, αλλά μόνο μέσω πίστης  προς τον Χριστό Ιησού, έχουμε και εμείς θέσει την πίστη μας στον Χριστό Ιησού, για να ανακηρυχτούμε δίκαιοι λόγω πίστης προς τον Χριστό,  και όχι λόγω έργων νόμου, επειδή λόγω έργων νόμου καμιά σάρκα δεν θα ανακηρυχτεί δίκαιη.   17  Αν, λοιπόν, επιζητώντας να ανακηρυχτούμε δίκαιοι μέσω του Χριστού,  έχουμε βρεθεί και εμείς αμαρτωλοί,  είναι ο Χριστός στην πραγματικότητα διάκονος της αμαρτίας;  Ποτέ να μη συμβεί αυτό!  18  Διότι αν αυτά ακριβώς τα πράγματα που κάποτε γκρέμισα τα οικοδομώ πάλι,  δείχνω ότι είμαι παραβάτης.   19  Όσο για εμένα, μέσω νόμου πέθανα ως προς το νόμο,  για να γίνω ζωντανός ως προς τον Θεό.  20  Έχω κρεμαστεί στο ξύλο μαζί με τον Χριστό.  Δεν είμαι πια εγώ που ζω,  αλλά είναι ο Χριστός που ζει σε ενότητα με εμένα.  Τη δε ζωή που ζω  τώρα στη σάρκα, τη ζω μέσω της πίστης που είναι προς τον Γιο του Θεού, ο οποίος με αγάπησε και παρέδωσε τον εαυτό του για εμένα.  21  Δεν παραμερίζω την παρ’ αξία καλοσύνη του Θεού·  διότι αν η δικαιοσύνη είναι μέσω νόμου,  άρα ο Χριστός πέθανε χωρίς λόγο.  
 

2 Then after fourteen years I again went up to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking also Titus along with me. 2 But I went up as a result of a revelation. And I laid before them the good news which I am preaching among the nations, privately, however, before those who were outstanding men, for fear that somehow I was running or had run in vain. 3 Nevertheless, not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, although he was a Greek. 4 But because of the false brothers brought in quietly, who sneaked in to spy upon our freedom which we have in union with Christ Jesus, that they might completely enslave us— 5 to these we did not yield by way of submission, no, not for an hour, in order that the truth of the good news might continue with YOU.

6 But on the part of those who seemed to be something—whatever sort of men they formerly were makes no difference to me—God does not go by a man’s outward appearance—to me, in fact, those outstanding men imparted nothing new. 7 But, on the contrary, when they saw that I had entrusted to me the good news for those who are uncircumcised, just as Peter [had it] for those who are circumcised— 8 for He who gave Peter powers necessary for an apostleship to those who are circumcised gave powers also to me for those who are of the nations; 9 yes, when they came to know the undeserved kindness that was given me, James and Cephas and John, the ones who seemed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of sharing together, that we should go to the nations, but they to those who are circumcised. 10 Only we should keep the poor in mind. This very thing I have also earnestly endeavored to do.

11 However, when Cephas came to Antioch, I resisted him face to face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before the arrival of certain men from James, he used to eat with people of the nations; but when they arrived, he went withdrawing and separating himself, in fear of those of the circumcised class. 13 The rest of the Jews also joined him in putting on this pretense, so that even Barnabas was led along with them in their pretense. 14 But when I saw they were not walking straight according to the truth of the good news, I said to Cephas before them all: “If you, though you are a Jew, live as the nations do, and not as Jews do, how is it that you are compelling people of the nations to live according to Jewish practice?”

15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners from the nations, 16 knowing as we do that a man is declared righteous, not due to works of law, but only through faith toward Christ Jesus, even we have put our faith in Christ Jesus, that we may be declared righteous due to faith toward Christ, and not due to works of law, because due to works of law no flesh will be declared righteous. 17 Now if we, in seeking to be declared righteous by means of Christ, have also ourselves been found sinners, is Christ in reality sin’s minister? May that never happen! 18 For if the very things that I once threw down I build up again, I demonstrate myself to be a transgressor. 19 As for me, through law I died toward law, that I might become alive toward God. 20 I am impaled along with Christ. It is no longer I that live, but it is Christ that is living in union with me. Indeed, the life that I now live in flesh I live by the faith that is toward the Son of God, who loved me and handed himself over for me. 21 I do not shove aside the undeserved kindness of God; for if righteousness is through law, Christ actually died for nothing.
